Patient question: I have a round face specially when I smile, I believe its because my face is fatty. I look so fat on the photos when I smile.I want to have sleek cheeks and contoured face.I believe this will increase my self confidence.pls help... Dr. John Mesa's Answer:
Patients of asian background who have chubby cheeks ( that makes them look round face specially when smiling) usually have enlarged buccal fat pads. Buccal fat pads are defined pockets of fat located deep in the lower anterior cheeks. This pockets of fat are sometimes enlarged (specially in patients from asian background ) and are resistant to decrease with diet and exercise. Buccal fat removal is the plastic surgery procedure that safely removes the buccal fat pads. This procedure allows the face to achieve a permanent thinner appearance that doesn't look round when smiling. The procedure also allows to achieve a more chiseled facial look. RF (radio frequency) procedures that melt fat ( usually underneath the skin treated) are unlikely to "melt" or "dissolve" the buccal fat pads. The reason is because they are located very deep inside the cheeks, which makes them extremely difficult to be reached by RF delivered thought the skin.
